At the heart of Karlstad lies an amazingly animal friendly nature park called Mariebergsskogen. The core of this park is to be an open-air museum with cabin’s build in early 1800’s. The man who owned the place was the safekeeper of three hills; Marieberg, Galgberget and Kvarnberget, and parts of Viken. Undoubtedly, his son would inherit all. He, Conrad Höök was fond of the forest, he decided to include the forest within the Landeri. The forest would gain great importance and a protected status. Conrad Höök had no heirs who could inherit the place, therefore he decided that Mariebergsskogen was to be donated to Karlstad city. The city promised to keep the park in its original state as best as possible. Eventually in 2010 the city opened the park for tourists and locals.
Small animal park at Mariebergsskogen
Within the forest lies a place that is called small forest for animals: Djurparken Lillskogen. Go through the gate and let kids be kids! They can go to sheep, goats, pigs, horses, cows, birds, chickens, and so much more! Sometimes they have the possibility to feed them or pet them. Mariebergsskogen organises numerous open days to engage children. You can think about a nice tour with interactive questions, feeding and cuddling time or themed activities. We recommend you to have a look for the exact days on the website of Mariebergsskogen.
Mariebergsskogen is stroller friendly. It has many possibilities to entertain immobile humans, but the best might be the train that runs through the park (high season). For kids you will find a watergarden, playground, animals and a short hike alongside birdwaters. You will spend your whole day here. Take a lunch at the restaurant or bring your own to prepare on one of the many BBQ’s. You will see many locals sitting around a BBQ and enjoying their free time. We will help you gladly if needed.
